As you may already know, veneers are a safe, long-lasting and effective way to treat crooked or misaligned teeth or whiten the appearance of the teeth. They’re considered a common, practical alternative to the likes of braces, bonding, teeth whitening treatments, and crowns.

Veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years and are custom made by your dentist, typically from either a porcelain or ceramic facing and then bonded onto the tooth. But despite the popularity and effectiveness of veneers, there is still a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to some of the intricate details of the facing, such as how much they cost, how long they take to apply and whether or not they’re safe. This article will aim to clear up many of these misconceptions and better help you make a decision on whether veneers are the right treatment for your situation:

Cost

Veneers vary in cost based on where you live and what dentist you have, but generally speaking they cost in the neighborhood of $1,500 per tooth, or about $12,000 to treat all eight teeth that show when you smile. While this may seem expensive, it’s typically cheaper than orthodontics to correct crooked or misaligned teeth, especially if there are only one or two that are causing an issue.

Typically, dental insurance doesn’t cover the cost of veneers, based on the fact that these facings are cosmetic procedures, although some plans do include this. So while it may seem like a steep out-of-pocket cost, keep in mind that many dental offices offer monthly payment plans on procedures not covered by insurance. Such payment plans also are often offered without interest, so long as the expense is paid off within a certain time period.

How long do veneers take to apply?

We already told you that veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years – and perhaps even longer than 20 years if you take proper care of them. But you may be wondering how long they take to apply. Generally speaking, the process lasts three to four weeks and three to four appointments. The first appointment is typically a consultation, where the dentist confirms that you’re a good candidate for veneers and takes impressions of your teeth to be treated. The next appointment usually consists of preparing the teeth for the veneers and possibly even placing temporary veneers on them to test for form, fit and comfort (think of this step like prototyping, a test period before it’s time for the real thing). At the third or fourth appointment, the temporary veneers are removed and, if all went well, the final veneers are bonded to your teeth.

In theory, the whole process can be completed in much faster time than four appointments, but a good dentist makes sure that they get everything right down to a ‘”t.”

Are veneers safe?

Simply put, yes. That’s because they’re considered a “conservative” dental treatment, especially when compared to crowns. Aside from being safe, it also doesn’t hurt when they’re applied. More often than not, a patient’s teeth require a minimal amount of preparation – or no preparation at all – and no anesthesia or pain medication is required. However, in some cases, anesthesia may be required to ensure maximum patient comfort.
